What is aquaculture?

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. In the saltwater aquarium hobby, aquaculture is the process of breeding fish and invertebrates in captivity. Aquaculture reduces the impact of the aquarium hobby on the environment. Several species of fish including clownfish are now bred and raised in captivity. Corals are now being grown from fragments that are cut. Live rock is now being grown in the ocean for the aquarium trade. Farmers take limestone rock and submerge it in the ocean for several years, allowing organisms to colonize the rock.
